BLUE

When you look down on Earth from outer space the planet is blue

Inspired by the cyanotypes of Anna Atkins, a pioneer in the history of photography, these photographs, from the series Blue, are made using the same Victorian process that she used in the 1850s.

The blue colour of the cyanotype process appeals to me because of my love of the seaside, thoughts of which shimmer as many shades of blue in the memories of my mind’s eye. I like to capture intimate views at the seaside, whether rocks, water, seaweed or scenes of everyday life along the shore.

Many of these cyanotypes were recently shown in my solo exhibition Blue at City Screen York, 7 – 28 August 2009.

There is more information on the cyanotype process and Anna Atkins in the Articles section of my website.
